Getting Interviews But No Job Offers?

Negative References Can Damage Your Career

You may well initially dismiss this as a possibility, if someone has agreed to be your referee why would they say anything negative? We will probably never know the real reason but you cannot afford not to be certain what they are saying about you.

Negative references can often be disproved but the damage may already be done.

Positive references are critical and can often be used to separate 2 or 3 equally qualified candidates.

What Are Your Referees Saying About You?

I recently conducted an interview with a candidate who ticked all the boxes for the role and came across very well during our discussions.

Qualifications – check, experience – check, cultural fit – check. The candidate was outstanding in every way and was short listed for an interview with my client. The interview with the hiring manager also went very well and prospects for this candidate were looking very promising.

The client was ready to make an offer subject to reference checks. I was keen to hear all the good things his referees were sure to have to say about him and suggested he let them know I would be calling.

The candidate readily provided contact details and of course assumed his referees would have positive things to say.

I was stunned at what was said, the feedback was not good at all and when I passed this on the candidate was absolutely devastated. He had no idea this referee had such negative things to say about him.

Whether or not the information provided was correct it had to be passed on to the client and taken into account and reviewed as part of the recruitment process.

The employer was not prepared to take a chance and the candidate missed a great opportunity.
